Advising
UNC at Chapel Hill currently works with a two-tier advising system. First, students have departmental advisers from whom they receive their PINs for registration and assistance in selecting courses to satisfy their major requirements. In addition, students are assigned to an advising team in the Academic Advising Programs in the General College and the College of Arts and Sciences (Steele Building) who will advise students regarding university requirements for graduation and interpretation of university rules and regulations (such as eligibility criteria and Perspective requirements). Advisors for Sociology now include: Dawson, Soles, Wesson, and Florin. They are located temporarily for the next year or so in the basement of Phillips. You should meet with one of these advisers at least yearly to make sure you are on track to graduate.
For sociology majors, advisers in the Department of Sociology hold
office regular hours each week. Majors are encouraged to meet with them
throughout the semester. Check the advising bulletin board outside the
main office (Hamilton 155) for advisers? office hours and locations.
Expanded hours for formal advising in the Sociology Department begin
each semester approximately two weeks before the early registration
period begins. Students can make an appointment to meet with an adviser
by selecting a time slot on the sign-up sheet. The available times are
posted on the bulletin board outside of Hamilton 155. Majors have three
options for pre-registration advising:
In-depth Advising
These 15+ minute time slots are for new majors who have not met with
an adviser in this department and for those students who would like to
discuss in depth any academic or personal concerns they may have with a
departmental adviser. Students may sign up for more then one 15 minute
slot if they would like additional time.
Short Advising
If you know the courses you would like to register for and do not
need to meet a full 15 minutes with a departmental adviser, you may
sign up for a shorter advising session. These are
first-come-first-serve blocks of time where an adviser will briefly
review your file and give you your PIN. Check the bulletin board for
short advising hours.
E-mail Advising
If you do not need personal, in-depth guidance for career plans, future aspirations, problems with courses, etc., you may choose to participate in e-mail advising. E-mail to Amy Lucas:
(1) the courses you plan to take during the
upcoming semester
(2) a list of the sociology courses you have
already taken
(3) your PID number.
As you are deciding what classes to register for, check out the ?Degree Audit? program in Student Central. The Degree Audit program gives you personally customized information on what GC, AS, and sociology requirements you have and have not fulfilled, how transfer credits count toward requirements, etc. This is a great tool to use before your advising session.
