Rekha Mirchandani, Ph.D. ‘97

Beloved mother, wife, sister, and daughter, died peacefully in Wood County Hospital, Bowling Green, Ohio, early in the morning of March 8, 2012, surrounded by members of her family. Born in Ithaca, N.Y., to Alice and Gagan Mirchandani, Rekha grew up in Burlington. After graduating from the University of Vermont, she earned her doctorate in Sociology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. An internationally accomplished scholar, Rekha’s work in social theory and law and society was published in the top journals of her field. She was an associate professor in the Sociology department at Bowling Green State University and had held prior faculty appointments at Bucknell University and the University of Utah. In 2009, Rekha was a MacCormick fellow in residence at the University of Edinburgh School of Law in Scotland. She enjoying skiing in her native Vermont, reading, writing and above all spending time with her family. Rekha’s warmth, kindness, and devotion are already missed by everyone lucky enough to have known her. Her indomitable will and courage will continue to inspire her children and the rest of us. She is survived by her parents; brother, Ravi Mirchandani; sister-in-law, Rebecca Shargel; husband, Albert Dzur; and daughters, Kiran Mirchandani Dzur and Neena Mirchandani Dzur.
